Abstract

This study aimed to analyze students‟ error in using grammatical cohesive devices and identify the types of error on the use of grammatical cohesive devices in narrative writing text at the tenth grade students of MAN 2 Palembang. This thesis analyzed 45 narrative texts written by X IIS 2 class students in the academic year 2017/2018. A descriptive qualitative research was used to identify the kinds of cohesive devices error and the types of error committed in those texts. It also identified the dominant errors occurred in the texts. The analysis of this research was based on Halliday and Hasan‟s (1976) cohesion framework and taxonomy. The result showed four kinds of grammatical cohesive devices error occurred in students‟ narrative texts namely reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. The results showed that a total of 103 errors were identified in those students‟ narrative writing text includes errors on the use of reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. The percentage of errors on the use of reference was 66.01%, substitution was 2.91%, ellipsis was 3.88% and conjunction was 27.18%. From percentage of each types of errors on the use of grammatical cohesive devices, reference became the first dominant error, conjunction as the second dominant error, and substitution as the last dominant error. From this research, it was expected that this study would be useful for English learners and it could be concluded that grammatical cohesion had very important role to make a good coherence in a text. By knowing the information of grammatical cohesion in written text, the students should pay attention to the use.
