Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out if there is a significant improvement on students reading comprehension achievement taught by using Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) strategy and to find out if there is a significant difference between the eleventh grade students’ reading comprehension achievement taught by using Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) strategy and those who are not at SMA Nurul Iman Palembang. In this study, quasi-experimental design was used. The population of the study was all the eleventh grade students of SMA Nurul Iman Palembang. The sample was selected by using purposive sampling method. There were 60 students selected, and each group consisted of 30 students. This study was conducted for about one month. During the treatment, the experimental group was taught by using GIST stategy while the control group was taught by using teacher’s method. There were twelve meetings spent for 90 minutes (2 x 45) in each meeting. The data were collected in the form of pretest and posttest of students’ reading comprehension scores. Then, it was analyzed by using independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test to meet the objectives of the study. From the analysis, it was found that there was a significant improvement on students pretest to posttest scores in experimental group taught by using GIST strategy since the p-output was lower than 0.025.
