Abstract
The objective of the study is to find out whether or not there is any significant difference on students’ reading comprehension achievement taught using that was then this is now strategy and teacher’s method. The population of the study was the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Palembang in the academic year of 2014/2015. The sample of the study was convenience sampling tehnique. The writer was assisted the class VIII.1 as the experimental group and VIII.2 as the control group. It consisted of 63 students, 32 students for experimental group and 31 students for control group. In this study, the writer used quasi experimental design. The instrument used in collecting the data was written test. The test was administered twice, as the pre-test and post-test for both control and experimental group. The results of the test were analyzed by using independent t-test. The result showed that teaching reading comprehension by using that was then this is now strategy had a significant effect on the students’ reading comprehension achievement. It can be seen from the result of students’ pretest scores in experimental group was 57.5000 and students’ posttest score in experimental group was 70.3906. The achievement of experimental group was higher than the achievement of control group. Based on the independent t-test analysis, it was found that p-output was lower than p-value or t-obtained was higher than t-table. From the table analysis, p-output was 0.000 and t-obtained was 5.032. The result was consulted to t-table at significane level 0.05 and critical value of t-table (2.000) in two-tailed testing. Since the p-output was lower than 0.05 and t-value was higher than critical value of t-table, so the null hypotheses (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypotheses (Ha) was accepted. It means that there was a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension achievement who were taught by using that was then this is now strategy and who were taught by teacher’s method of SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Palembang.
