Abstract

The using of lexical items in writing has a great influence in communication using written language. But there has been relatively little research into the lexical errors learners produced in writing foreign language. The objectives of this study were 1) to find out the type of lexical errors in students’ of MAN 2 Palembang in writing descriptive compositions. 2) to find out the most frequent types of lexical errors made by tenth grade students’ of MAN 2 Palembang in their descriptive compositions. Thirty three students of tenth grade students at MAN 2 Palembang were assigned to write descriptive compositions in English based on the topics provided by researcher. They were asked to write composition during 40 minutes without consulting their dictionaries. The frequencies of errors were calculated as percentage. In this thesis the researcher used lexical error taxonomy based on James (1998) to identify the English compositions of tenth grade students’ of MAN 2 Palembang. This study revealed that (a) the participant (tenth grade students of MAN 2 Palembang) contributed both formal and semantic errors in their descriptive compositions (b) the most frequent types lexical errors contributed by participant were ‘calque’. The identified sources of errors were mainly from first language (L1) transfer rather than L2 intrinsic difficulty. This research hopely could give some information for the teacher of English in term of lexical aspects in teaching and learning English as a foreign language.
